Wukro is a town in northern Ethiopia in the Tigray region in particular. The population is growing rapidly, especially in recent years and has already reached 35,000. The socio-economic aspects of the town and surrounding area have much effect on it due to continuous drought, shortage of fertile lands and AIDS. As a result, many children living on the street, orphans, poor and displaced families, suffering from tuberculosis, AIDS and other diseases.
Slow economic growth along with a large growth in population is creating an imbalance in employment opportunities and demand for labor. According to the office of youth, there are 7800 young people in the village, of which 3300 are unemployed. That is why many of these young people spend much of their time stealing, gambling, drinking alcohol, pornographic videos and other morally wrong views. The consequence is that a large number of young people in prison (60%).
The creation of the College of Saint Mary as technical and vocational school aims to unemployed young people addressing a formal and informal learning. In addition to more academic aspects, the school is also responsible for development activities. One such program is aimed at empowering (believing in themselves) to young people through sport. To this end, the school formed a committee of six members who are responsible for the coordination of all activities conducted within and outside of school.
This summer, organized "A summer together at Saint Mary" covering many sports for a period of two weeks. Because the families themselves can not afford to pay for these activities, financial assistance is being sought.
